Ladies, it's that time of year again. Can you believe it? Time to kick off the holiday shopping season! Here at Sugar, we are very excited about this Christmas season as we've "decked our halls" and stocked the store with the MOST merchandise ever - just for YOU!

Here at Sugar, we've carried the fabulous line Ellen & Ollie before. We dabbled into her exclusive collection and brought in a few exquisite styles for our customers the past few seasons. Molly Stevens, the owner, designer, and seamstress, {also local girl who resides in Columbia and is a Clemson graduate} was doing every aspect by hand and on her own. Well now we are excited to announce that Molly has found a local SC manufacturer and has finally went wholesale with her new line! She had her first "booth" at AmericasMart a few weeks ago and we were delighted to see the new styles and what she has in store for Spring! Now we will definitely have LOTS of great pieces from her and we are so excited to let you take a sneak peek to ensure we get exactly what style you love in the exact size you need.

What are "transition pieces"?

Transition styles are pieces that you can simply wear now [in Summer] then transition and wear them later [in the Fall/Winter].

We've received several Early Fall styles this week from Tulle that will help you do just that! Really gives you more bang for your buck since you can wear these styles much longer than you think. Take a look....

If you don't already have an LBS, "little black skirt", then don't miss out on this one!

At $38 bucks it's perfect to wear now with tanks galore, then layer over fun colored tights with boots this Fall/Winter!

Here's a classic cotton dress by Tulle in this oh-so-neat splatter paint fabric. You can barely see it until close up. We love navy because it's a great color for Summer and then into Fall. Wear this dress with a colorful pair of sandals for now, then layer a fun cardigan and cowboy boots over it in the Fall!

We LOVE this layered Fall stripes dress with button detail at shoulder and elastic waist.
We've added an Elise M belt to accent this look, but think how great it would look also in the Fall with a denim jacket and boots? Great colors!

This new cardigan with pockets by Rain has got PIZAZZ. Check out the studded/chain detail at the shoulder. We love it with a bright pink Dance in Paris tee for now, but then layer it over a black long sleeve tee in the Fall/Winter with skinnies and motorcycle boots for a fun "rocker chic" look!

Another great wrap style. Again, love it over a tank for now but you can also layer up over a long sleeve Dance in Paris tee this Fall. The beautiful creme color makes for a great neutral!

Trendspotting: Denim Shorts

We just received Paige Premium Denim cuffed Debonair short. The fabric is to die for! So incredibly soft and lightweight. Nice dark wash that you can dress up or dress down.

Certainly not your average "jorts" ;)

Celebs everywhere are wearing the "jean short" [or "jort"] trend. Dress it up or dress it down, it's a must have for Summer

Here's a version of the Paige Premium Denim short, worn by Rachel Bilson.

The ones we have in store are a darker wash and more of a "trouser short" style.

Short shorts and heels? Yes! It's a sexy little look to try.

Personally, i love short denim shorts with oversized tunics, cute sandals, sunglasses and an oversized bag. Such an easy, casual look to pull off and so chic!

We just got in the most amazing pair of Citizens jeans today! It's the Hutton Medium Rise Wide Leg in Oxford Wash. The oxford wash is great for Summer because it's so lightweight and slightly distressed. The medium rise is a great way to "ease into" the high rise/wide leg trend. Celebs are wearing them everywhere and we're going to show you how you can too

Khloe pairs it with a flowy tunic, a leather jacket, and wedges. Easy and look how long/lean it makes her legs look! Love.

We are so pleased at how our new Dance in Paris display has turned out! We ordered over 10 new styles and colors at market, so they are on the way to the store as we speak.

The cube bookcase and hooks make it so much easier to see the color assortment. If you've never tried on a Dance in Paris layering tee/tank before, now is the time. It's one of our best selling lines and for good reason. Seamless, comfy, colorful and you will find yourself wearing them time and time again. They also wash well and lasts for-eva.

We just got back from a long weekend at Apparel Mart in Atlanta. We searched long and hard for the PERFECT styles to bring in for everyone this Summer/Early Fall. Some items will even begin shipping over the next few weeks. We're so excited to show you what's on the way. We'll do several "Sneak Peek" posts so you can pre-order, but for now I'll show you some of my TOP "SWEET" styles that we snagged. Here's what I'm obsessed with...

First, we LOVE that the gals of LK Designs are making special skirts for our 3 Year Birthday in April. We can't WAIT for you to see but you'll have to wait because it's a surprise! We will show you these cute, unique cardigans that will go with EVERYTHING.

Spotted on the runways, on the streets, and all over fashion blogs, the military-inspired style is undeniably a major trend this Fall. With so many service-ready pieces to choose from — chunky green jackets, cargo pants, and even khaki nail polish — it is beyond easy to work the look into your wardrobe. However, keep in mind to only rock one to two pieces of militia gear at a time, because suiting up head to toe isn't so chic. Now, there are a few different ways to take on the trend, but I'd start with an army jacket or vest. Choose a style with a cinched or belted waist and think of it as a substitute for your black blazer to be worn with a feminine dress or jeans and a tee. Next, pick out a flattering pair of skinny cargo pants. A new twist on the skinny jean, the extra detailing makes the style a go-to look for Fall. Concerning footwear, I love the look of tough girl booties to transition you into Fall. Find a pair that lace up or with buckles and wear them with your favorite skirt and thick socks. Our trip to Lillyland and a sneak peek of Spring 2011

We are simply beaming after returning from West Palm Beach (the land of all things Lilly) this week. The Spring 2011 collection looks AMAZING. I know we say this every time, but this is definitely the best collection ever. It seriously keeps getting better and better.

During our trip, we had a long day of viewing the Spring collection and writing orders. We keep all of our sweet customers in mind and this time we made sure to stock up on requested sizes and even ordered MORE and MORE just to ensure we would always have enough! To break up our long day, Lilly Pulitzer herself surprised us and came to have lunch with us. We had the privilege to meet Lilly before in December and it was a treat to have lunch with her again. She laughed and carried on with us as if she'd known us her entire life. It was so neat to hear her fun stories and how it all began. We were thrilled to see that the nearly-famous blog Kelly's Korner posted about the brand Tru Colors yesterday. Sugar has worked with Amy, the owner of Tru Colors, for the past year now in hopes of creating styles in true Clemson and Carolina colors. Well, this year Amy finally made it happen - just in time for kickoff - and Sugar will be one of the first boutiques in SC to carry the Clemson/Carolina styles.

These unique pieces are made of comfy cotton (when tailgating in the deep South, us gals always love our cool cotton) and they are priced less than $100. What's not to love?

Well, here at Sugar we'd just like to call them "denim leggings". Let's introduce you again to Mrs. Lola, the hot new style from !iT Jeans that just arrived in the shop this week. If you've been in or around Greenwood the past few weeks you've noticed the amazing topiaries in Uptown Greenwood as SC's Festival of Flowers is in full swing. [or should I say "bloom"?]

Sugar just received a fabulous new line of clothing by designer Tracy Negoshian. It's preppy, fun prints combined with classic styles. (Hmmm...sounds like another one of our favorite lines doesn't it? Maybe Lilly perhaps?) Tracy Negoshian, Inc was created by and has been the dream of Tracy since her college days at the University of South Florida. She was inspired by Tory Burch and Lilly Pulitzer and wanted to create the same fun styles at affordable prices.

We love her fresh prints and we're delighted to see such great customer response to it. Then again, what's not to love? We should have a new shipment arriving soon, so keep checking back with us.

Will the last church hostess to leave the powder room please grab the Aqua Net?

A friend of mine visited a college campus recently and was aghast to see coeds walking to class in shorts and tank tops best suited to the gym. “My grandmother used to put on lipstick to go to the mailbox”, she said wistfully. Our transformation from church-hostess Southern to lost-my-kid-gloves modern sort of slipped up on us. First came panty hose {no need to wrestle those nylons} and hot rollers {so long, bonnet hair dryer}, then pantsuits – in church! With the wave of an unmanicured hand, we had abandoned our half-slips, misplaced our Revlon “Love That Red,” tossed out our teasing combs, and taken up with sensible shoes.

Some icons of our feminine past won’t be missed at all. To that bonney hair dryer and clear-to-here girdle, we say good riddance. To the teasing comb, we offer a more reverent farewell. Together with Aqua Net hair spray, it gave generations of pageant hair the strength to bear a tiara, and that ought to mean something.

But as we boldly march forward, let us remember that “Mama’n’em” knew a thing or two about style. And I can name three blasts from our past that deserve a comeback.

1. The Easter Dress

We used to start shopping for our Easter dresses before the Valentine’s candy was even stale. An Easter dress was your prettiest, dressiest Sunday-go-to-meetin’ ensemble of the year. It screamed spring: floaty fabrics in pastel colors; short sleeves, puff sleeves, or no sleeves; store-bought or handmade. Pearls required. Hat and glove optional after 1960. If you were under 12, you wore pastel dotted Swiss, patent leather Mary Janes, and maybe a color-coordinated hat with a little elastic band that hooked under your chin. No matter what your age, the biggest challenge was trying not to shiver, since even the Deep South tends to have a mysterious cold snap on Easter (perhaps as a divine reminder that this is a worship experience, not a fashion show).

2. The Mother’s Day Corsage

When I was a kid, if a mother came to church without a corsage from her children, the whole family went on everybody’s prayer list. Now almost nobody buys one, and that’s a shame. Here’s how it works. You choose the flowers for your mother’s corsage based on whether her mother is living or dead. If her mother’s living, she wears roses or carnations in pink or red. If her mother has crossed over, she wears white or yellow roses or an orchid. Everybody gets baby’s breath. Its just the right thing to do.

3. The Hostess Apron

“When you saw my grandmother’s mint-green organza apron, you knew some cucumber sandwiches were coming out,” my friend Rebecca says. Back in the day, Southern women wore kitchen aprons, which they actually wiped their hands on while they cooked, and hostess aprons, which adorned and protected their good dresses while they served guests. Hostess aprons are all over the Web, so this would be a fairly simple charge to lead if we all work together.

Take the Pledge

Preserving our heritage takes commitment. We have to band together. So ladies, wherever you are, stand up, raise your right hand, and repeat after me: I (your name here), pledge to do my part to bring back the Easter dress. I pledge to order corsages right this minute, before the florist runs out of the good stuff. As for the hostess apron… I pledge to tie one on.
